HCH Jim Dresslar Digital Museum

Jeff Bibb Past Guildmaster championed this project.
I hope to expand the horns on display here over time.
Thank you, Rick Sheets Master Horner and Publications Committee Chair

On behalf of the Honourable Company of Horners, I would like to welcome you to the HCH Jim Dresslar Digital Museum. We believe this presentation will provide a new way of studying important historical horn work from a perspective previously unavailable to most students and artisans of the genre. We hope that you will utilize this valuable resource, and enjoy your time here. Several years ago I was approached at a long rifle show by Mr. David Wright. He indicated that since Jim’s passing, his wife, Carolyn, and Dave Wesbrook were in possession of all the original photographs used in the groundbreaking book, The Engraved Powder Horn. Since it was first published in 1996, this book has provided a treasure trove of images and descriptions of over one hundred important, historical powder horns. David indicated that it was Carolyn and Dave’s wish that the photographs used in the book be donated to an organization that would protect and use them to further the work Jim did in his book. David believed that as the leading organization for historical horn work, the Honourable Company of Horners would be the best recipients of these important images. Following long periods of discussion and the logistics involved, the HCH Executive Committee approved a decision to proceed. While the exact circumstances escape me, a couple of members involved with our Publications Committee suggested that we could publish these images on our website, making them easily accessible to most members of our organization. Further discussion revealed that current technology would enable us to isolate a specific area of the horn being viewed and enlarge it to any degree. This allows the intimate study of details in the horn’s engraving that are almost impossible to discern when perusing the photographs in the book. The images in this museum were all digitally transferred in high resolution from the original 4” X 5” transparencies used for the book. The transfer of original images this size allows a degree of quality unobtainable with modern digital photography. With our zoom feature, you are now able to see features that surpass examination of the original horn. Finally, I would like to extend special recognition and thanks to the people who made this museum possible. First, to Carolyn Dresslar and Dave Wesbrook, who very generously donated this important collection to the HCH. Second to David Wright, who had the foresight to believe that that our guild could manage a project of this importance. A special thanks to Bill Carter and Rick Sheets who have worked tirelessly to sort, organize, and produce this museum project. Grateful thanks are also extended to our Executive Committee, who believed in this project and provided the means for it to become a reality. Jeff Bibb Publications Committee Chairman November, 2014
